Alpha Quest Youth Mentoring Program Jan ’20

The AQYMP January’s program was held at Friendship Baptist Church on February 1, 2020. The days program consisted of three elements.
The first was a round chair discussion with the Questers on how to interact with the police. Brother James Pickett, Evanston Deputy Police Chief, and Andre Poston, Chicago Police Sergeant, were there to speak with the boys on police interactions.

The conversation started with introductions from everyone and the officers asking the young men how many of them had either a positive or negative experience with the police. Of the 12 kids, five (5) had positive experiences and two (2) had negative experiences. The two who had negative experiences shared their stories and the officers then had a thorough discussion on their issues.
The officers both gave the Questers valuable insight into the work of policing, how to deal with a negative police situation, and strategies on how to deal with being a young Black male in today’s society.

Element two (2) was a tie tying demonstration. Led by Brother Bobbie Bowman, the young men were given ties and shown multiple ways to tie them along with being given a handout showing the methods being discussed. Brothers Reggie Greenwood (Youth Program Coordinator), Charles Colston, Geoff Bradley-Bey, and Corey Bulluck then worked with the young men to practice what they were taught. After a few practice runs each Quester was required to tie their respective tie. Once they passed the exam, they were then given their Official Alpha Quest tie for future use.

Element three (3) dealt with Personal Hygiene for young men. The Questers was shown a YouTube video on the subject and a robust conversation was had on the topic. At the end the Young Men were all given goodies bags with personal grooming item that were donated by Brother Arthur Cotman and Brother Reggie Greenwood.

Young Eagle Flight Activity

First off, I want to say we had an awesome time with the Scholars learning about the World of Aviation and also getting the opportunity to fly over Lake Michigan. Some of the young men even got the chance to pilot the planes. Hopefully they were excited as we were to see them flying high with the Tuskegee Airmen Young Eagles Group.

The Young Eagles is a program developed by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) to introduce children, ages 8 to 17 to the exciting world of flight. The Young Eagles program encourages volunteer EAA pilots to volunteer their time, aircraft, and fuel to give free introductions to aeronautics to the children
